Kilburn’s Korner Garden
Genesis 2 8 Now the Lord God had planted a garden-----
Benefits of project to Gwinnett Community:
The SE Gwinnett Co-Op garden provides fresh vegetables and fruits to the clients at the Co-Op.
The crops are harvested as needed and given immediately to the co-op pantry for cleaning and distribution to their clients.
Crops are planted and harvested for the Spring, Summer, and Fall seasons.
The garden also attracts people to the co-op because they are interested in what it is all about and want to participate in helping the co-op process and help clients in the community in need of food and/or financial assistance.
Various church/school groups donate time for their community projects to help with various aspects of the garden work.
Education component in the project:
The garden is used to teach Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and various local school/church youth about gardening and doing community projects.
The youth do actual “hands-on” work of weeding, tilling, planting and harvesting crops.
Boy Scouts may submit various project proposals in order to complete their Eagle Scout requirements.
Previously Eagle Scout projects have been completed for compost bins, work table, benches, and, raised beds.
A Men’s group built two benches in memory of a participant’s son and donated them to the garden.
Ongoing Maintenance:
The soil in the beds is amended with fertilizer, compost and topsoil each time a new crop is planted.
Weeding of the beds is completed as needed; and harvesting of crops is completed as needed.
The garden is cleaned and maintained with pine straw and perennial flowers around the work area.
Soil testing is done with our own soil testing equipment.
Approximate number of volunteers:
Currently I have a list of 27 volunteers on my email distribution.
As a work day is scheduled, an email is sent out advising the volunteers of the pending work planned.
On an average, approximate 3-6 volunteers who are available will respond to the request.
During the year, several schools, scout troops, and/or churches will call and ask to participate in the garden as a community service project.
These volunteers come from Loganville Christian Academy, Grayson and South Gwinnett High Schools, and various churches/scout troops in the area.
Usually these groups will have as many as 10 volunteers.
